MediaMarkt launches in Belgium, Poland & Turkey

MediaMarkt, a major European electronics retailer, is stepping up its game by launching its online marketplace in Belgium, Poland, and Turkey. This follows successful rollouts in countries like Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands, where its marketplace revenue doubled to €277 million last year.

MediaMarkt’s marketplace is all about consumer electronics and related products, offering a more focused alternative to Amazon’s all-encompassing platform. Sellers handle their own logistics and customer service, with a strong emphasis on local language support—something that might resonate well in these new regions. Meanwhile, Amazon’s strength lies in its vast product range and powerhouse logistics network, which MediaMarkt doesn’t directly compete with.

But here's the catch: by focusing on electronics and adding new categories like sports equipment and children’s products, MediaMarkt could attract a niche audience that prefers a specialist over a generalist. This could potentially chip away at Amazon’s market share in these regions, especially if sellers and buyers see value in a more tailored offering.

While Amazon still has its logistical edge and massive reach, MediaMarkt’s targeted approach makes this a launch worth keeping an eye on. It’s not about taking down the giant, but carving out a solid piece of the pie in the electronics game.
