Amazon Finally Launches in Ireland!
After years of speculation, Amazon has finally launched in Ireland. This moment follows their establishment of a fulfillment center in Dublin in 2022, a clear step towards this expansion. The dedicated Irish online store offers customers a localised shopping experience. Prime Membership is also now available, providing free and fast delivery, as well as access to Prime Video and gaming. As expected, the initial product assortment is limited, featuring categories such as Books, Pets, Electronics, Home & Kitchen, Beauty, Health & Household, Office, and Grocery. However, numerous subcategories, such as Alcohol, which require specialised storage, handling, and delivery, are notably absent.
Amazon's territorial growth has slowed following a period of rapid international expansion from 2017 to 2022, during which they introduced eleven new marketplaces. This deceleration is attributable to both market saturation and a strategic shift towards profitability. The Irish launch follows a proven pattern: Amazon enters a new market by leveraging the established infrastructure of a neighboring country, as seen with the Netherlands and Germany. However, few markets remain that can follow this model, as other significant territories are more isolated and require substantial capital investment, such as Chile, Colombia, or Nigeria. In these cases, Amazon may replicate the strategies employed in South Africa and Saudi Arabia by acquiring local competitors.
